Design history of the Jeep Wrangler first generation (1987-1996)

The first Jeep Wrangler off-road capable model manufactured by Chrysler company debuted in 1987 under YJ code name. The car’s exterior was a blend of power and sizable dimensions. Jeep Wrangler was easily recognizable by a removable hardtop, rectangular headlamps and location of wiper blades on the windscreen. The latter two features were removed, when the TJ version appeared in 1996. The car’s interior style of the first generation was very simple with no excesses, the dashboard housed only the basic minimum of gauges.

Design history of the Jeep Wrangler second generation (1997-2006)

Introduction of the TJ version of Jeep Wrangler (1997 nominal model year) marked launching of the SUV's second generation. Design concept remained unchanged, except for the headlamps, which returned to a round shape alike the ones on CJ jeeps, Wrangler’s ancestors. Comfort and driveability of the car were improved. Jeep Wrangler’s interior had a notable restyling. Designers updated the dashboard with relief surrounds of functional modules. The control levers and the steering wheel got a stylish look. The seats became more comfortable. The rear seats could be folded down or detached for better interior capabilities. The Rubicon version was offered since 2002, it was developed to withstand the hardest off-road conditions. The auto had a unique design and Wrangler’s brand colour. The Rubicon badge was shining on the both sides of the hood. Wrangler Unlimited model was introduced in the United States in autumn 2003 featuring an extended wheelbase and body, offering more comfort for the passengers.
